Why tomato fruits crack and split and how to reduce it naturally

Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding crops at home, so it is frustrating to see ripening fruit suddenly crack or split open. The good news is that most cracking problems can be reduced with a few simple care habits, without resorting to special products.
This guide explains why cracking happens, how to tell different types of splits apart, and practical ways to keep your next harvest smoother and longer lasting.
What tomato cracking looks like
Cracking usually appears in two main patterns. One is a series of rings or concentric circles around the stem end, like a target pattern. The other is a long crack that runs down the side of the fruit, sometimes deep enough to expose the inside.
Both types can show up on green, turning or fully red fruit. Early cracks may look shallow and dry. If the weather stays warm and damp, they can widen and become dark, soft or slimy as microbes enter the damaged skin.
Why tomato skins split
Tomatoes swell as they take up water. When water arrives faster than the skin can stretch, the surface gives way and a crack forms. This usually happens after a period of dryness followed by sudden heavy rain or a large watering.
Irregular moisture is the main driver, but other factors make cracking more likely: very rapid growth, thin skinned varieties, hot sun after cool weather, and high humidity that keeps the surface damp and more prone to tearing.
Fruit traits and variety choice
Not all tomatoes respond the same way. Large beefsteak types, cherry trusses packed with many fruits, and heirlooms with very thin skins are more prone to visible damage when water supply swings up and down.
Seed packets and catalogues often mention if a variety has some crack resistance. For outdoor beds in regions with summer storms, choosing these can make a big difference. Thick skinned salad varieties and smaller fruits generally have fewer splitting problems.
Watering habits that reduce splitting

Since uneven moisture is the key trigger, the most effective step is to make soil moisture as consistent as possible. Aim for deep, steady watering rather than light, erratic sprinkles that leave roots alternately dry and soaked.
In beds, water thoroughly once or twice a week depending on heat and rainfall, letting moisture sink 15 to 20 cm down. In containers, check daily in hot weather and water when the top few centimetres are dry, but avoid letting pots swing from bone dry to saturated.
Mulch and soil structure
A layer of organic mulch helps keep moisture levels more stable. Straw, shredded leaves, grass clippings that are not treated with herbicides, or compost spread 5 to 8 cm thick around the base can reduce evaporation and temperature swings.
Healthy soil with plenty of organic matter acts like a sponge. Over time, regular additions of compost or well rotted manure improve both drainage and water holding, so roots experience fewer extremes after showers or irrigation.
Managing rain and container drainage
Outdoor crops are exposed to sudden downpours that can undo your careful watering schedule. You cannot stop the rain, but you can help water move through the root zone instead of pooling around stems and roots.
Raised beds, ridged rows and well drained potting mixes allow extra water to escape. Containers must have open drainage holes. If buckets or decorative sleeves trap water at the bottom, drill holes or lift pots onto feet or bricks so surplus moisture can run off.
Shade and temperature balance

Strong sun on wet fruit can exaggerate cracking. After heavy rain or a big watering, fruit skins are plumper and more fragile. If that is followed by intense midday heat, the sudden change can stress the surface and widen small splits.
In very hot regions, a light shade cloth or netting during the fiercest midday hours can soften rapid heating and cooling. Pruning to open the canopy slightly helps air flow, which dries droplets on fruit more quickly and reduces surface stress.
Feeding and growth rate
Nutrition has an indirect role. High nitrogen levels encourage very fast growth and large, soft fruit that may crack more easily. A more balanced feed, with moderate nitrogen and good levels of potassium, usually produces firmer, better structured harvests.
Use compost and slow release organic feeds rather than frequent strong soluble fertilisers. Follow package rates and avoid doubling up. Overfeeding will not prevent splitting and may bring other troubles like lush, weak growth and fewer flowers.
What to do with cracked tomatoes
Not every split fruit needs to be discarded. If cracks are shallow, dry and light coloured, and there is no sign of mold or slime, the fruit is usually safe to eat. Pick it promptly, wash it, cut away the damaged area and use it soon, ideally cooked or in sauces.
Deep cracks that expose the interior or show dark, soft or fuzzy patches should be composted or discarded. Leaving damaged fruit on the plant invites rot and can attract insects and slugs that then move on to healthier fruit.

Reducing cracking is about small, consistent habits rather than a single trick. As you plan your next crop, keep a short checklist in mind to nudge conditions in the right direction.
- Choose at least one crack resistant variety, especially for outdoor beds.
- Improve soil with compost each season and avoid compacted, waterlogged spots.
- Water deeply and regularly, not in short, erratic bursts.
- Mulch around stems to buffer moisture and temperature swings.
- Ensure pots and beds drain freely and are not sitting in standing water.
- Use balanced feeding, avoid excess nitrogen, and aim for steady growth.
Some splitting is almost unavoidable in a rainy or highly variable summer, so perfection is unrealistic. However, with more even moisture, better soil and thoughtful variety choice, most home growers can see a clear drop in cracked fruit and enjoy a larger share of smooth, usable tomatoes.
